Pulsating Carnival in Rio.... thousands of handheld candles at the open air opera in Verona… revellers waist-high in tomatoes at the Tomatina Festival. The greatest festival experiences in the world are ones where you, the audience, are part of the action!
To open this year’s Festival, you’re invited to immerse yourself in the miraculous world of French street theatre. Wear something pink and experience La Vie en Rose with confetti, majorettes and neon clad rock and roll; you can get swallowed by a giant caterpillar then perform as part of a full scale symphony on the streets! An evening designed to make you smile and discover your inner child.

Fanfare starts on Beresford Square at 7.00pm and will finish at approximately 9.30pm.
The Bell starts on Number 1 Street, Royal Arsenal at 9.45pm and will finish at approximately 10.30pm. Entrance to the Royal Arsenal is via the gates adjacent to the Royal Brass Foundry on Plumstead Road. Please note that The Bell contains fire and pyrotechnic effects.

Festival Fanfare - Artists
The Concert de Public (Public Orchestra) is a magical musical performance in which the audience is placed centre-stage. It has toured extensively in Europe and the Far East and is a creation of Lieux Publics, the National Centre for the Creation of Street Arts based in Marseilles. Under director Pierre Sauvageot, the Centre leads the In Situ European street arts network.

Rose ‘n Co are specialists in the art of bringing camp and colour to public spaces in a uniquely French way.
With 15 years of street theatre expertise, in their processional show La Bagnole (The Motor) they parade through the crowds with a highly theatrical vehicle, majorette costumes and confetti.
La Fanfare Electrique have revolutionised French fanfare music, electrifying the streets with their very own mobile version of rock and roll. Clad in violent pink costumes, they grab the attention of audiences with their ambient guitar renditions of classic rock anthems.

Zic Zazou are well known to Festival audiences, having brought their mischievous roving bandstand to Woolwich two years ago. Injecting Pythonesque humour and theatrical wizardry wherever they go, they bring a fantastic inventiveness to the tradition of French fanfare. Their giant caterpillar La Bete dans la Ville has been spotted devouring audiences in France and has crossed the Channel for its London premiere.

The Festival is delighted to be returning to Woolwich for its first night for the third year running. This year’s Fanfare marks the opening of a new Docklands Light Railway shop at 14 Beresford Square. Last year The Guardian awarded the Festival’s opening night in Woolwich four stars – we’re aiming for five in 2008!
