Bend It... Artists
Founded by Place Prize winning Artistic Director Nina Rajarani, Srishti creates dance work that maintains the authenticity of Indian classical dance and music whilst presenting these forms in innovative ways and in contemporary contexts. The company has a passion for, and extremely in-depth knowledge of, Bharatanatyam (a South Asian dance style) and Karnatic music, its natural accompaniment.
Last year, in the company’s first venture into the outdoors, Nina Rajarani adapted her existing highly acclaimed piece Quick! into a performance which brought this classically precise, fast-paced vision of corporate life onto the street. For 2008 she is developing a new aerial dimension to the company’s vocabulary, facilitated by Upswing Aerial. With Bend it…, Nina will again be adapting a piece of indoor, theatre-based work for outdoors, using the inspiration of football to explore masculinity in new and spectacular ways.
Upswing Aerial is a young circus company led by Artistic Director Vicki Amedume which aims to challenge cultural barriers. Previously an Associate Director at GDF, Vicki’s work has included Voices (GDIF 2004) as well Luved Up, commissioned for the Trafalgar Square Festival in 2006.
