"A thrilling showcase of high octane performing arts that use architectural landmarks as their backdrop." The Sunday Times
Greenwich+Docklands International Festival returns this summer with a ten-day rollercoaster of theatre, dance and spectacle. The best of UK and international street arts will bring extraordinary sights and sounds to Greenwich and East London in this historic Olympic Year. You can expect to experience everything from awesome night-time spectaculars, to stunning theatre productions and captivating dance performances.
outdoors - indoors
For the first time ever the Festival will be bringing the spirit of the outdoors inside an arts venue with the world premiere of CROW (jointly commissioned by the London 2012 Festival and The Royal Borough of Greenwich), a dance theatre realisation of Ted Hughes’ powerful poems by Handspring Puppet Company, whose puppetry in War Horse has been seen by audiences of millions across the world.*
GDIF 2012 will also see a host of new works from leading UK theatre artists who have traditionally worked inside theatre buildings. These world premieres will offer compelling new outdoor theatre from some of the most exciting voices in the UK.
street arts and spectacles
GDIF will also welcome back last year’s contemporary reinvention of the Dickensian Greenwich Fair with a packed showcase of street arts, sideshows and games. A wonderful line-up for Dancing City at Canary Wharf includes choreographed shopping trollies and a maritime themed dance trail. And following in the footsteps of last year’s successful productions of Les Girafes and As the World Tipped, Woolwich Town Centre and Mile End Park will again host thrilling night time spectacles.
More programme highlights for 2012 will be announced early March! Keep an eye out, pencil the festival dates into your diary and follow us on twitter and facebook to catch some behind-the-scenes discussions and latest GDIF news in the mean time.
